Eyecon tabletop automation solution

Livonia, MI—August 25, 2011—Bloomfield Pharmacy, a locally owned pharmacy in Pontiac, Michigan, uses the Eyecon® tabletop automation solution by Avery Weigh-Tronix to increase efficiency and ensure accuracy in the prescription counting and filling process. Eyecon is a prescription validation, counting and filling system designed to improve filling accuracy, customer safety and inventory management.

“We knew after a couple days of using the Eyecon demo that we would be purchasing it to replace our prior automated system,” said Ed Pascua, pharmacist at Bloomfield Pharmacy. “Eyecon had taken the concept of automated pill counting and enhanced the accuracy and usability, yielding a superior product.”

With its unique Visual Counting System™, the Eyecon tabletop automation solution increases filling accuracy and improves customer safety. It employs machine vision technology via a camera mounted above the counting tray, which captures images of the pills as users pour them into the tray. The system boasts a field-tested accuracy rate of nearly 100 percent due to this design: five images are captured each second, and Eyecon counts pills within 200 ms and updates the pill count with each image taken. Eyecon additionally benefits technicians by reducing tedium and allowing them to spend more time with customers.

The Eyecon offers both standalone and Pharmacy Management Software System (PMSS) options. The standalone option allows users to select from three modes: count, validation and inventory. Bloomfield Pharmacy originally used Eyecon for simple counting and visual verification of product through its count mode. Now, the pharmacy uses the validation mode to facilitate sophisticated quality assurance: a pharmacy technician uses the Eyecon’s barcode scanner to scan both the prescription label and the stock bottle. If the two do not reflect the same drug, the filling process cannot proceed.

“The Eyecon system has freed up our technicians to better multi-task and focus more on face-to-face customer contact,” Pascua said. “We’ve found that it is virtually error-free and very easy to use.”

Bloomfield estimates that the Eyecon system allows technicians to spend 30 to 40 percent more face time with customers—a pivotal advantage at a pharmacy where local, dedicated service is a major contributor to customer retention. Today at Bloomfield Pharmacy, all technicians can easily utilize this automated solution to improve and expedite the prescription filling process, as well as overall customer service.
